Last few weeks have been difficult. I recently remembered and started using the core teaching of Letting go for last 2 weeks while I was caged in my own home. And i must tell you this has truly helped me cherish all these days.
Let me tell you how.
Our brains are known to accumulate more of what we worry about. And these days there is no bigger common worry that this virus thing. And what is happening? We are accumulating more of it. No, not the virus, but the worry, fear and anxiety around it.
But is it helping us get anything better for us or our loved ones? Mostly no. It is okay to care about those precautions which I am sure you must be following. But is this anxiety and worry worth your time and effort.
Why waste this precious time for something which you don’t want. Just Let it go.
I know making it go away is not in our direct control. But worry caused by it sure can be let go. And that is what we will learn in today’s practice.
But before we go there, let us ponder upon why do we worry at all in such times of crisis? Possibly, we do not know a better response to such a situation or maybe we have created a habit pattern around it.
Below are a few points that we I used to see situations more mindfully and let go the worry and anxiety. I would prefer to call these four contemplations on letting go or four questions for a worry-free life.
So, whenever a thought of worry strikes you next try to run these contemplations/questions internally. Trust me, all worries will start keeping a safe distance from you very soon and you will be living a productive happy life.
1. Am I holding it for too long?
“Things are only heavy when you hold it. when you let it go, it’s got no weight at all”
Have you ever held a glass of water? Sure, you must have. It doesn’t feel too heavy. Right?
What if you continue holding it for some more time? Just fifteen minutes later it may seem heavier than a hammer and another fifteen minutes later you may no longer be able to hold it. The longer you hold the heavier it gets. At least psychologically.
The same goes true for our thoughts and worries. The longer we hold, the heavier they get and the more they worry us. Only if we can be a little more compassionate for ourselves and decide to let go can we be free of our worries and experience bliss and peace at this very moment. Here and now.
2. Am I happy where I am? (Contentment in the now)
“Want to be here, wherever here may be, and you will be free”
Often times, we feel that we do not like the place we are in, the job we do or the situation of life we are in. The moment we create this thought, we invite worry and peace-lessness to life. No matter how luxurious a place maybe, if you do not accept yourself being there and want to leave it, you are in your self-created mental prison. A golden prison, if I may say so.
There is a saying you might have heard, “Bloom where you are planted”. We may never understand its true meaning if we never accept our current situation or our current state of being. Only if we acknowledge and accept the present as the choice of God for our own good, can we start to see the positive aspects of the situation.
There may be no better time than now when we experience peace and bliss. Only if we accept and be content with what we have and take a fresh look at life can we see the new beginnings in everything that is. There are no miracles that happen at a time other than now. Remember, “This moment is full of wonders and all that I want to be, I can be right here, right now”
3. Can I give without expecting anything in return? (The joy of Giving)
“Giving, expecting nothing back in return”
Gratitude and the art of giving sets us into a state of mind where we are free of all sorts of cravings and expectations. Giving away the expectations sets us free from any worry that is created because of the expectations and dissatisfaction caused by the outcomes. Once we let go the expectatisons, there will be nothing we can be ever worried about
4. Is my cup empty or is it full? (Am I open to take in new wisdom?)
“Never allow knowledge to stand in the way of truth”
Many a time our own knowledge stands in our way. There may already be so much knowledge that we might have heard or read, which makes us reject any new thought or insight. A new way to look at life can only be learned if we are free to accept it. If we are ready to accept any new way of looking at things. Knowledge should always take us ahead and never block our path towards a more enlightened life.
I hope you find these points helpful in living a happier worry-free life.
